What is abuse?

Every couple and family have arguments or disagreements. In a respectful and equal relationship, partners feel safe and able to express their feelings and opinions, to be themselves and to make their own decisions and supported in this.

When an individual is in an abusive relationship, one partner will often use control to undermine and dominate the other through physical harm, coercive and controlling behaviour, demands, threats, or sexual pressure.

Look out for signs that an individual may be experiencing domestic abuse:

Often there can be signs which you recognise which may indicate that an individual is experiencing domestic abuse, remember only some or none of these indicators will be present

Physical Signs:

  • Black eyes
  • Busted lips
  • Red or purple marks on the neck
  • Sprained wrists
  • Bruises on the arms

Emotional Signs:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Overly apologetic
  • Fearful
  • Changes in sleeping or eating patterns
  • Anxious or on edge
  • Substance abuse
  • Symptoms of depression
  • Loss of interest in once enjoyed activities and hobbies
  • Talking about suicide

Environmental Signs:

  • Becoming withdrawn or distant
  • Cancelling appointments or meetings at the last minute
  • Being late often
  • Excessive privacy concerning their personal life
  • Isolating themselves from friends and family
